CAIR Seeks Hate Crime Charges for Assault on Idaho Muslim Man arrested for threatening woman, claiming concealed weapon (WASHINGTON, DC, 12/24/10) — A prominent national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to bring hate crime charges against an Idaho man who allegedly threatened a Muslim woman while she was shopping Wednesday at a Walmart in that state. The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the Twin Falls, Idaho, man allegedly approached the woman, who wore an Islamic headscarf and was with her two children, and asked if she was Muslim. When the woman said she is Muslim, the assailant reportedly told her he spent time in Iraq and “my friends were killed by you, I was blown up by you.” According to court records, the alleged assailant also shouted that the woman “didn’t belong here in the US” and claimed he had killed Muslims and planned to kill more. He also reportedly told the Muslim woman that he had a concealed weapon. A loaded weapon was later found in the man’s car. The 42-year-old man was arraigned Thursday on a charge of felony malicious harassment. The BLM says they’ll likely have the two largest blazes under control sometime Sunday evening, but the third is proving tough to bridle. That fire is called Dead Horse. It’s burning just five miles northeast of Bliss and the latest estimates put it at about 3000 acres. Roughly 140 firefighters are attacking it and they’re up against extreme terrain. You can see its smoke filling the sky by day, but at night its glow is something some people pull their cars over to watch. Folks around town say they’ve seen fires like it before – just never so many, so close together at the same time. “It’s a concern because they are on all sides of us,” Duane Burg of Gooding says. “They’re coming from every direction.” “I’m just worried about the winds that come through here and it being out of control.” A few miles south of Bliss, another fire named Windmill has charred about 27 square miles, destroyed some 30 power poles and threatened four out-buildings. That fire is almost contained. Not too far from there, yet another fire called Double A has burned about 19 square miles. It’s contained now, but crews are dousing hot spots to make sure nothing else flares up.
